Voting Rules
  • You may judge each competition once.

  • Musician War members believe that judgment should focus primarily on the technical and melodic merits of the main instrument in the entry.

  • We respectfully discourage voting based on the merits of secondary instruments or the notation.

  • Championships have special rules. Know the rules before you vote.

  • Challenge Wars (including Grudge Match and Skill Match) have custom rules which change for each contest. The rules are posted on the voting page. Do not vote without reading the challenge rules.

  • Here are some of the common custom challenge rules:
    • Accuracy (who is sloppier?)
    • Complexity Focus (which one is harder to play?)
    • Composition Focus (which one has more melodic/chordal development?)
    • Hit Potential (which one more likely to be a hit song?)
    • Melody Focus (which one has a more catchy or interesting lead?)
    • Production Focus (who made the better backing and overall sound?)
    • Speed Focus (who is faster?)

  • Your rank affects the value of your vote:
    • Judge = 1
    • Competitor = 2
    • 500 Club = 5

  • Bass (Standard Rules) focus primarily on the technical and melodic merits of the bass guitar in the entry.

  • Guitar (Standard Rules) focus primarily on the technical and melodic merits of the lead guitar in the entry.

Overview of Types of Events
  • Amateur Amateur War is designed as a safe starting place for beginners, people working on their second instrument and people with rusty skills. Amateur is identical to Melee except the outcome does not affect either competitor's overall statistics.Amateur competition is not for every new member. Experienced musicians should not compete as amateurs.

  • Showcase Showcase is a place to gather comments on a piece of music without entering into competition. Anything can be posted here, as long as it follows the core entry rules.

  • Team Team War is a collaborative effort among members to create music together despite living in different parts of the world. Any two or more members can form a team and enter into competition against other teams. Teams have their own shared disk space and private message board so that they can coordinate their efforts.

  • Melee Melee War is a simple first-come first-served competition, open to any style and any technique as long as the instrument is the same. The first person is listed as "waiting" until the next person posts an entry.By entering Melee War, you are guaranteed an opponent, generally quickly, but the entry might be very different from your own.

  • Pro Championship Pro War is the main event at Musician War. It is the ultimate championship that showcases "the whole package:" composition, creativity, sound production and overall technique of the main instrument. Pro War is a king-of-the-hill style championship where the winner stays on to face the next challenger. Only competitors with current or lifetime stats of .500 (with at least 10 entries) or prior Pro War winners are eligible to participate.

  • Challenge Challenge War gives competitors more control over the rules and participants of a competition. If you create a challenge, you control the rules. You can select the backing track, musical genre, key signature, whatever rules you think will be most interesting. You can open your challenge up to all members, only members +/-.125 of your average with skill match, or challenge another competitor with grudge match. Challenge can be whatever you want it to be. However, you are not guaranteed an opponent. Other players may decline to accept your challenge and it will expired in 30 days.

  • Championship Championships show off the most extreme talent at Musician War. Each championship is a king-of-the-hill style competition focused on one particular technique or style of playing the instrument. The winner stays on to face the next challenger. Over time, the winning entry becomes harder and harder and harder to beat. Expert posts only are allowed in championships.

Entry Rules
  • Core Entry Rule: The main instrument in any entry must be played by the named competitor.

  • Core Entry Rule: Competitors must credit the composer on any covers, no matter how original the arrangement, or how obscure the piece.

  • Core Entry Rule: Posting the same performance more than once, for any reason is called a repost. Reposts will not be accepted unless posted as a challenge repost war. A substantially re-worked, re-recorded version of an entry is not considered a repost.

  • Core Entry Rule: Vocals and lyrics are only allowed in Vocal and Songwriting competitions. All other competitions are instrumental only. Exception: incidental vocals (vocals used as sound effects) are OK in any entry.

  • Amateur Amateur competition does not affect a competitor's win/loss statistics.

  • Amateur Amateur competition is limited to members who are not in 500 Club and have not "graduated" from Amateur competition for that instrument.

Notation Rules
  • Every Musician War entry must be notated according to the rules for that instrument. Notating your entry is a courtesy to other members. They will spend a surprising amount of time reviewing your work and making suggestions. The notation is a way to give back and show respect for their efforts.

The reason for the notation requirement is so that members don't have to ear train to figure out your tune, should they be interested in copying a riff or two. You will also benefit from other people notating their work. Notating your entry should generally take less than 10 minutes.

Find blank sheets here: bass tab, guitar tab, piano tab, production notes.

  • Bass requires 8 bars of bass tab.

  • Guitar requires 8 bars of guitar tab.

  • Songwriting requires a lyric sheet with chords.

  • Synth requires 8 bars of piano tab,or 8 bars of guitar tab, a midi file or production notes.

  • Team requires the appropriate notation for the lead instruments chosen by the team.

  • Vocal requires a lyric sheet.

Cheating
  • Cheaters will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

  • Cheating includes: Speeding up an entry, posting a piece that you did not perform, operating more than one account for any reason, sharing one account between multiple people, colluding with others to vote as a block, plagiarism (taking credit for someone else's composition), soliciting votes and other attempts to deceive other members or subvert the voting system.

  • Do not publicly accuse another member of cheating. Accusing a member of cheating is a rule violation that carries a 5 day gag order penalty.

  • Report suspected cheating to the cheat committee. Suspected cheating should be reported to immediately. Each individual case will be scrutinized by the Musician War cheat committee. The cheat committee's decisions are final.
